FAITH
Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed with the responsibilities and care of a loved one's illness? If so, you are not alone. Many people struggle with feelings of doubt, fear, and uncertainty when faced with these challenges. But there is hope.
One source of comfort and guidance during these trying times can be found in faith. When we bring our worries and concerns to God in prayer, we allow ourselves to tap into a source of strength beyond our own.
Before we move forward, let's take a moment, and pray. Let us invite the Holy Spirit to come into our hearts and minds to give us the wisdom we need to understand God's love in the darkest moments. Let us offer ourselves up to Him and ask for the courage, wisdom, and hope we need in this storm.
Father God, we carry many doubts and fears that cause us stress and anxiety. We pray for your answers, and we ask that you be with us every step of the way. Guide us, show us your love, and help us understand your plan for us. Amen.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities of care giving, take heart. You are not alone, and there is hope. Reach out to God in prayer and trust that He will provide you with the strength and comfort you need.
After driving Catherine to the hospital for her first surgery, the gravity of the situation hit me and I realised I needed some pastoral guidance, so I headed to the vicarage to try and find my local Vicar, Nick. Unfortunately, he wasn't in. I also tried the Church but this was also closed, so I decided to sit on a bench in the nearby park and try to make sense the situation. Although I struggled to find the right words to express my concerns, I continued to try and pray, hoping to find some solace.
Just as I was about to give up and head home, Nick suddenly appeared. It felt like divine timing, and we sat down to speak for a while. Nick prayed for Catherine and me, and although I can't recall his exact words, something shifted in me. The feelings of dread and fear that had previously weighed me down were replaced by a sense of peace and hope.
God's timing seemed evident, and I was reminded of several verses from the Bible that helped me find purpose in my role as Catherine's primary caregiver. These words gave me renewed strength and determination to be there for my loved one during this difficult time.
In Matthew chapter 6 v34
"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." - Matthew 6:34 (ESV)
This passage comes from the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus is speaking to his disciples about various spiritual practices, including prayer, fasting, and trusting in God. Jesus is encouraging his followers not to worry about the future, but instead to focus on the present and trust in God to provide for their needs.
For me the phrase "tomorrow will be anxious for itself" suggests that we should not be preoccupied with what may or may not happen tomorrow. Instead, we should focus on the tasks and responsibilities that are in front of us today. This verse does not mean that we should neglect planning for the future or ignore important matters that require attention. Rather, it encourages us to trust in God and to take things one day at a time. The challenges of each day are sufficient in themselves, and worrying about the future only adds unnecessary stress to our lives.
A further passage from Matthew that stood out was.
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." - Matthew 11:28 (ESV)
This verse is part of Jesus' invitation to people to follow him and find rest for their souls. Jesus is speaking to those who are experiencing weariness, exhaustion, and heavy burdens, and He is offering them a solution to their struggles.
The phrase "come to me" implies an invitation to approach Jesus and to trust in Him for comfort and strength. Jesus is inviting all those who are feeling weighed down by life's challenges to come to Him and find rest. This rest is not just physical but also spiritual; it is the kind of rest that provides peace and comfort for the soul.
The phrase "I will give you rest" suggests that Jesus is not just offering a temporary solution to our problems, but a permanent solution that can provide lasting peace and healing. Through faith in Jesus, we can find the rest and relief from burdens that we desperately need.
These biblical references showcase the comfort and guidance that God can offer during difficult situations, the importance of bearing one another's burdens, and the reassurance that 'God is with us through our struggles'.
Closing prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come to you today with hearts heavy with fear and anxiety as we face the unknown. As we sit and wait for a loved one to go through a life-changing surgery, we ask that you be present with us, giving us peace in our hearts and courage as we face the challenges ahead.
We lift up our loved one to you, asking that you guide the hands of the medical professionals with wisdom and skill, and that you protect them during and after the surgery.
We ask for your strength and comfort for those who are rallying together to give practical support. When being a caregiver becomes difficult, we ask that you grant us the grace to keep going and the wisdom to maintain our own well-being. Help us to recognise that there is a lot of help out there, and to not be afraid to ask for it.
May we never forget that it takes a team to look after a loved one, and may we rally our friends and relatives to lend support, whether it's by prepping meals, shopping, cleaning, school runs, or sleepovers.
We also pray for guidance as we speak to our employers and let them know our situation. Grant us the courage and wisdom to ask for the help we need.
And finally, we pray that we may always remember to listen to our loved one and shower them with love, even in the midst of our struggles.
We thank you for your eternal love and faithfulness, and pray all these things in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.
